A high risk of rip currents and High Surf Advisory are in effect Wednesday morning through Thursday evening for all of the lower Texas coast. Life-threatening rip currents and large, breaking waves are expected to increase Wednesday afternoon. All swimmers are urged to avoid swimming.
A coastal flood advisory is in effect from 7 am Wednesday through 7 pm Thursday as the swells from Hurricane Laura across the southeast Gulf of Mexico begin to reach the lower Texas coast Wednesday. This will produce minor coastal flooding along the lower Texas coast especially near times of high tide Wednesday through Thursday.
At 10 PM CDT, the center of Hurricane Laura was located about 405 mi SE of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Laura is moving toward the west-northwest near 17 mph, and this general motion should continue overnight. On the forecast track, the center of Laura will move across the northwestern Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday. The hurricane should approach the upper Texas and Southwest Louisiana coasts on Wednesday evening and move inland near those areas Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 90 mph with higher gusts. Significant strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours, and Laura is expected to be a major hurricane at landfall. Rapid weakening is expected after Laura makes landfall.
Adverse beach conditions are expected today as large swells from Hurricane Laura create a High Risk of rip currents. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are also forecast.
Summer drags on, and above normal temperatures are forecast across Deep South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. Precipitation-wise, some isolated showers and thunderstorms may occur on Thursday due to some outer rainbands from Hurricane Laura. Afterwards, for the weeeknd and into early next week, a better chance of rain is expected due to the approach from the east of a disturbance in the middle layers of the atmosphere.
